Breast Intentions

For something so instinctive, breastfeeding can be fraught with intricacy. A day of incorrect latching can lead to several weeks' worth of cracked nipples, plugged ducts, painful infections, not to mention fears of starving babies and sky-high levels of frustration.

Before running for the formula aisle of the nearest drugstore, check out the new book "Mama Knows Breast: A Beginner's Guide to Breastfeeding." Journalist and mom Andi Silverman seeks to steer new moms away from the edge with a handbook filled with friendly, frank advice.

Among Andi's tips for breastfeeding success:
•  Aim for the milk supply trifecta: food, drink and sleep. You may have heard it before, but it bears repeating – sleep when the baby sleeps. As for food, eat a well-balanced diet and drink enough water to prevent dehydration.
•  Avoid underwires and bras that are too small. Wearing a supportive bra is important for comfort, but bras that either are too tight or have underwires can block your milk ducts.
•  The more you pump, the more milk you'll have. Breastfeeding follows the simple economic principle of supply and demand. Pump or feed your baby more, and you'll have more milk. Pump or feed less, and you'll have less milk. To increase your supply, pump at the same time every day. Once your milk has stopped flowing, pump for two more minutes – the more stimulation, the better.
•  Buy some sexy nursing bras. Lace. Leopard print. Bright red silk. Go for a bit of glitz. It will be a welcome change from your everyday nursing bras that are most likely grey from constant washings.
